Orange Brownies Initiated by UMM Students Expected to be a Featured Product of Selorejo

Orange brownies? Maybe it sounds unfamiliar, but this University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) innovation deserves a thumbs up. Not only the innovative product but also their initiation were expected to boost up the economy Selorejo Village, Dau district, Malang Regency.

Started from the funding proposal Bina Desa Grant Program (PHBD), students from Agribusiness Student Association (Himagri) Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (FPP) UMM successfully completed the funding phase of Kemenristek Dikti as a community empowerment program in the innovative product scope.

The abundant orange fruits commodity on North of Malang regency has many potentials to be developed. All this time, Selorejo Village only known as an orange picking tourism place. These students groups want to make orange abundant in this village have a high economical value.

Jedi Prasetyo the Leader of UMM Himagri with their team immediately held brownies making training. In fact, the villagers already submitted a Home Industry Food (PIRT) permission. While waiting for the process, the team keep on perfecting the product to the Agribusiness Department for the feasibility test.

After several production trials for six months, continued Jedi, the orange brownies or branded as Browjer were qualified and met the market quality. This innovation is very potential to be a superior product. “The marketing will not only in the village and gift shops,” said this young man from Central Kalimantan.

The FPP UMM Agribusiness Head Department, Dr. Ir. Istis Baroh, MP, appreciated the Himagri members who came up with this program. Yet several things must be addressed so that the concept will be perfect. Such as there must be a complete training module for the residents. Started from the management, calculate the production costs, until the marketing.

According to Istis, not just orange brownies, orange fruits were also can be processed to be ready to drink orange juice. This can increase the abundant commodity production and may impact the financial profit. This accepted proposal of Himagri UMM students by Ristek Dikti were free from the Community Service Program and also Field Practice. (joh)
