The Dean of FK UMM Talked about Prevention of Coronavirus

Responding to the spread of the Coronavirus or 2019 Coronavirus Novel (2019-nCoV) which was said to come from Wuhan, China. Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Dr. dr. Meddy Setiawan, Sp. PD said that this virus was a virus that was relatively new in the medical world.

"This virus attacks the human respiratory system. From the common cold to severe illnesses such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). The novel Coronavirus (n-CoV) was a new type that had not been previously identified in humans. Coronavirus was zoonosis, meaning that it was transmitted between animals and humans, "Meddy said, Wednesday (1/30).

According to Meddy, who was also an expert in Internal Medicine, several Coronaviruses were known to circulate in animals that had not infected humans. "It is urged for the public to pay attention to the animal foods consumed. Avoid eating animals alive so that the virus does not spread to humans," he explained.

The first indication that occurred when exposed to this virus was the flu accompanied by body heat, fever, and breathless, causing respiratory failure. This fast-incubating virus, Meddy said, had to get medical treatment swiftly and responsively in order to minimize mortality.

"There is no specific treatment for the 2019-nCoV virus, the treatment we provide is supportive in accordance with the indication. Until now, there is no vaccine available for 2019-nCoV," added Meddy.

Preventive measures suggested by Meddy to avoid contracting the virus was wearing a mask, correct cough ethics, consuming antioxidants and balanced nutritious food, stopping smoking, washing hands using antiseptic soap and running water while delaying travelling to areas where the virus was high.
