The Meaning of Independence is Freedom For, Not Just Freedom From

The 74th Independence Commemoration of Republic Indonesia in University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Saturday (17/8), choosing the Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si. as the ceremony inspector. In his speech, Syamsul delivered the meaning of independence concept in front of thousands of UMM academics.

First, independence is a process. "To achieve independence requires a very long time, mustsacrifice energy, tears, and even blood that requires thousands of livesfor the beloved Republic of Indonesia," said Syamsul in the Field III Campus Heliped field, UMM White Campus.

Syamsul then quoted the statement of the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. "Independence is not a gift. It is (born) from tears, and shed blood." Thus, said Syamsul, independence as part of this process must be interpreted together.

Today we commemorate the 74th anniversary, meaning we are "independent from" or freedom from to go to "independent for" or freedom for. 74 years ago, we were free from colonialism, or freedom from. So, when the meaning of independence we stop there, it does not give any meaning.

Conversely, independence must be continued with freedom for or independence for what? "If we can be free from the external environment, today is a momentum to realize independence by realizing all the virtues that we can carry out," he said.

Further related to the meaning of independence, Syamsul again quoted a statement this time from a poet Kahlill Gibran. "Independence in the wrong sense is to realize what we want. But independence in the right sense is to realize what we must do, "he quoted.

"What we want means short-term desires. But what we have to do means what we do and realize in terms of ethics and morals, "he explained at the flag ceremony ceremony which was also attended by a number of Taiwanese students who were members of the Meinong People Association (MPA) of Taiwan.
