Students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) through a group of Community Service Program 84 UMM 2019 tried to promote East Javanese art, Barongan. One of them was through the Barongan Festival in Ndawung Field, Kedungsalam Village, Donomulyo District, Malang Regency, Saturday (3/8).
The chair of the Committee, Luguh Wasono explained, the Barongan festival was shown to promote the Barong cultural arts to be preserved. It also was done to enhance the creativity of human art and culture, create communication and good relations between artists. He hoped this activity can become an annual event.
The individual Barong Competition was participated by 44 participants from all regions of Malang Regency. Interestingly, the competition this time was not only attended by men but also women and children. This proved that Barongan art did not limit the gender and age of the players.

The race was divided into two rounds. They were the preliminary and final rounds which were attended by 30 participants. Meanwhile, the assessment criteria were emphasized on the agility of the Barong and character sentiments. "Fashion, Costume, and beauty of Barong, and the ethics and manners of the Barong actor," he said.
"In addition to preserving Malangan's culture, this agenda also promotes Malang district, especially Kedungsaalam Village, Donomulyo District as a Cultural Village. Besides that, this event was held mainly to commemorate the 74th Birthday of the Republic of Indonesia," Luguh said, Monday ( 5/8) afternoon.

This art reflected populist traits, spontaneity, family, and simplicity. It also showed the nature of the rough, hard, compact, and courage based on truth. Players wore costumes that resemble Singo Barong as a disguised form of a four-legged creature or two with a lion's head.
Besides Barong, this festival also held anti-drug gymnastics with students of SDN 4 Kedungsalam. After that, it was continued with Lien Tien Kung's gymnastics and a kindergarten coloring contest and Early Childhood Education (PAUD) level participated by 287 participants.
