University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Surya Team has proven their persistence by brilliantly appearing in a number of Indonesian Bridge Competitions (KJI) and Indonesian Building Competitions (KBGI) in Jakarta State Polytechnic 7-10 November 2019. Despite not qualified as the general champion, UMM achieved many rewards in KJI, those were the 2nd National Champion of Cable-Stayed Bridge Model, 2nd National Champion of Arch Bridge Model and 4th National Position on Scale Steel Bridge.
Not just that, Surya Team at KJI also won the Strongest category, implemented possibility category champion, and champion in the Most Complete K3 category. The four teams namely Gajendra, Maheswara Team, Great Apollo, and Dandelion Diamond, whose proposals successfully passed the competition with 50 other proposals. Ten finalists have presented their proposals in Jakarta. UMM is the only private campus that has succeeded in passing and competing with state universities such as ITS, ITB, UB, Polban, UI and other state universities.
In the Arched Bridge category, represented by the Maheswara Team with the name Kar Jaged Bridge, abridgethat won two titles, namely 2nd Champion and Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Category. Whereas in the Cable-Stayed Bridge category, represented by Great Apollo with their Tektona Bridge,abridge that got three achievements at the same time, namely the 2nd National Champion, the winner of the Strongest Bridge Category, and the Champion of the Conformity of Design Implementation.
The most interesting bridge is the Sapeh Kerrap Bridge, the bridge that won the 1st place in the category of the Highway Scale Steel Frame was inspired by the Madurese local culture, "Karapan Sapi". The form of the rider holder is implemented in the form of the railing. The shape of the ox horn is implemented in the shape of a streetlight pole. Besides being sturdy with <2 MM deflection, this bridge is also light with <150 KG of structure weight. This bridge is very innovative because it is environmentally friendly and efficient loads distribution.
Novan Surya Adityawan, the general chairman of the Surya Team UMM in his statement explained, although he was not fortunate at KBGI, he admitted that he was very satisfied with the achievements of his team. "Whether we want to win or not, the important thing is that we have tried our best. We do not regret it, even though we are not champions. We will improve it in the next event. Especially improving understanding related to TOR," he said when contacted via telephone on his way from Jakarta back to Malang, Monday (11/11).
In 2014, UMM was the host of the 10th KJI and 6th KBGI. Since it was the first time, both of them have always been held at the state campus. Meanwhile, in KBGI at Maranatha Christian University, Bandung, November 2015, UMM succeeded in winning the General Champion, shifting the dominance of the defending champions of the Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) and the mainstay of the host team, competing for the Cipta Griya Indonesia Cup run very competitive.
