Based on the ranking of Universities based on Community Service Performance for the period of 2016-2018 by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was included in the Superior cluster. The clustering was based on the results of the performance evaluation of the Community Service and the Decree of the Director General of Strengthening Research and Development number 29 / E / KPT / 2019 dated September 27, 2019.
UMM was ranked 18th, outperforming the performance ranks of community service of other private universities (PTS), as well as State Universities such as Andalas University (20th), Surabaya State University (23rd), Makassar State University (24th) University of Indonesia (ranked 21). The entry of UMM into the Superior cluster proved the recognition of the Indonesian government, in this case, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education that UMM's performance was very in accordance with the standards.

Community service conducted by UMM lecturers needed to be seen from the perspective as follows pentahelex: First, service was an implementation of synergy between the 5 elements called which includes elements of government, community, academics, entrepreneurs, and the media. "UMM has a commitment. What is produced by lecturers in the academic field, for example research, must provide benefits among others for the community," said Vice Rector I of UMM Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin.
Second, empowerment the community. There were many service activities conducted by lecturers and students of UMM White Campus which had impacted empowerment on the community, for example in the fields of agriculture and energy such as Micro Hydro Power Plants (PLTMH) implemented in a number of regions. In essence, Syamsul reiterated, academic activities should not merely be ivory towers, but had to have praxis value to the community.
The assessed aspects of community service were 25 per cent of Human Resources (HR), 20 per cent of community service management (DPPM management), products like that had been produced by service 45 per cent. The products were produced through a number of schemes such as KKN-PPM, village assistance, and regional superior service. Funding reached 50-60 million a year and could reach 100 million for multi-year, such as mentoring partner villages and regional superior.
Vice Director I for Research and Community Service of Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) UMM Dr. Vina Salviana Darvina S, M.Si. stated, UMM had an internal service scheme whose scheme model was claimed to be equivalent to the Ministry of Research and Technology and Higher Education's evaluation standard. Before being submitted to the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, the proposal submitted would go through stages and rigorous selection by DPPM UMM so that it had a great chance of getting funding.
