The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to create great works. This time, through the Industrial Engineering Expo (IEE), the Industrial Engineering Study Program displayed works made by 2020 and 2021 students. The agenda, held on January 18, attracted much attention because of the various technological innovations that can facilitate human activities.
Amelia Khoidir, S.T., M.Sc., the chief organizer, stated that the "Exploring Integrated System Design and Product Development" expo is an annual event showcasing student works. This year, the Industrial Engineering program presented two exhibitions: product development for the 2021 cohort and integrated system design for the 2020 batch, newly held this year.
"The main goal is to promote students' achievements in applying their industrial engineering knowledge to real projects. The emphasis is not only on understanding theory, but also on encouraging students to turn that theory into actual products or innovative tools," she added.
This year's IEE focused on student innovations related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and waste reduction. The exhibited works included unique products such as dolls that respond to conversations, sign language interpreter gloves, a forest fire detection device, and more. Over 20 projects from the 2021 batch and 30 projects from the 2020 batch were showcased.
One particularly attention-grabbing project was the Tech-Smart Gloves, a sign language interpreter glove created by Yoga Adiwinata Prayitno and team. When the gloves form sign language gestures, they automatically translate the signs into audio.

The gloves are equipped with Arduino Flex Sensors mounted on the fingers. This sensor can detect changes in finger movement and convert them into audio. So that when used, this sensor can translate to sound.
"When used by deaf friends, this sensor will read sign language movements and translate them into audio. As a result, other friends can know the meaning of the sign language even if they don't understand it," Yoga added.
The expo not only presented finished products, but also highlighted collaborations between students and SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). The products resulted from identifying and addressing issues faced by SMEs. The proposed ideas can be developed into finished products if they receive funding and approval.
Ir. Shanty Kusuma Dewi ST., MT. IPM, Head of the Industrial Engineering Program, expressed gratitude for the successful organization of the student exhibition. She urged students to ensure that their creations go beyond fulfilling coursework requirements, encouraging them to participate in competitions or even patent their innovations for the benefit of many people.
