The teaching profession in Indonesia has a central role in improving the quality of education. Behind students' achievements, teachers play a role in shaping their character and knowledge. However, the professionalism and welfare of teachers are often underestimated. As a result, many young people are hesitant to choose teaching as their career choice.
The issue was dismissed by Dr. Iin Hindun, M.Kes., as the Head of the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Iin highlighted that teacher mobility in the period 2023 to 2030 experienced a significant increase. Every year around 60 thousand teachers retire, so new regeneration is needed in the world of education.
"However, being a teacher is not enough, if you only have academic qualifications and graduation certificate. Professional certification through PPG is the main requirement to enter the world of education," said Iin.

She added that in reality, many teachers are still not certified for PPG. This also sparked the Ministry of Education and Culture through the Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel (Ditjen GTK) to open PPG pre-ASN (State Civil Servants) formations. Interestingly, the program is aimed at fresh graduates and will be funded by the government for one year.
"After graduating from this program, they are ready to replace retiring teachers. This is not just a promise, but has been proven to work. This program provides opportunities for graduates to join the Educator and Education Personnel Development Program (P3K) and become State Civil Apparatus (ASN)," said Iin, who is also a Biology Education lecturer.
In this case, many wondered about the placement of the concerned teacher. In response to this, Iin stated that the teachers were allowed to choose a location according to their domicile. However, if the domicile has been fulfilled, they will be assigned to areas in need of teachers.
"This provides important flexibility to ensure that every region has qualified teachers," Iin said.
Another challenge of being a teacher is time. Technology is increasingly multiplying, which results in frequent changes in the education curriculum system. As an educator, I realize that the curriculum always follows the times. "The principle is the same, which is to perfect a set of plans that will be implemented in the world of education," she said.

According to her, nowadays teachers are not the only source of learning. Therefore, teachers must be able to facilitate how students learn by utilizing existing technology. "This is a development that cannot be avoided, but can be used as a reference for more effective learning and young people have this spirit," she said.
The ease of the teaching profession today opens up new opportunities for the younger generation of teachers to contribute to improving the quality of education in Indonesia. Iin is also optimistic that the future of Indonesian education will continue to get better. The future of education in the country will certainly be brighter with innovation and adaptation to technological developments. (*lai/wil/fajr)
