An alumnus of the Forestry Program from the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (FPP) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is now successfully working in a mining company. Fajar Ramadhan, a 2014 alumnus, is currently a Forestry Supervisor at PT Kapuas Bara Utama, a coal mining company.

Fajar, as he is commonly known, attributes his current success to the knowledge he gained during his time at university. He was also actively involved in campus organizations, including the Department Student Association (HMJ) and the Student Executive Organizations (BEM).

“The education at UMM was excellent. In the Forestry program, we didn’t just get theory in class but also practical experience in the field. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course was particularly useful in my current job. Additionally, my involvement in organizations unknowingly honed my soft skills, such as communication and critical thinking,” he shared.

As a Forestry Supervisor, the Lumajang native is responsible for land clearing and reforestation of areas that have been mined. He explained that the role requires strong analytical skills to assess land potential.

“I handle land mapping for mining locations, and also oversee reforestation of land after mining is completed. Additionally, calculating taxes for the land cleared and ensuring the company pays them to the government is part of my duties as a Forestry Supervisor,” he explained.

He also provided advice for students on how to survive in the real world after graduation. He emphasized the importance of honing skills relevant to one's career interests and the need to work hard and maintain good social etiquette.

“Young people should plan early to understand their next steps. Determine which skills to develop, ensuring they are relevant to your goals,” he advised.

Finally, he encouraged all UMM students to be earnest in their pursuit of knowledge. He stressed that in a world of constant change, knowledge is a vital tool to navigate it.

“Don’t just focus on skills that can be automated by technology. Strive to become an expert in fields that are difficult to replace by automation,” he concluded.(Faq/Fajr)
