Another interesting innovation was created by students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). This time, it is a smart vest equipped with a heart rate sensor feature to measure the rhythm of the human heartbeat in real time. Called Vest Health, the innovative creation of the Industrial Engineering Student Team can detect early signs of fatigue to help anticipate the risk of traffic accidents. Uniquely, the features of this tool can be accessed remotely via a Wi-Fi network. Valdio Febrilian, a member of the team, stated that this health and safety tool is suitable for all drivers, especially those working in logistics.

“The high rate of traffic accidents caused by drowsy drivers or fatigue during travel in recent years is one of the reasons we created Vest Health. Generally, an indicator of early fatigue can be seen when a person's heart rate is between 50-65 bpm. However, we deliberately set the warning alarm feature on this vest to trigger earlier, at 70 bpm, to help anticipate the early symptoms of fatigue,” he explained.

The device is also equipped with a module that includes a mini monitor to display the user's heart rate. Interestingly, a website connected to the module on Vest Health is designed to be accessible to many people. This allows others, such as companies, to easily monitor the heart rate of employees or workers using the smart vest. Valdio explained that the alert signal will be sent to both the user and the device connected to the website.

“Vest Health is designed to be used in real time (online) by anyone, anytime, as long as it is connected to the network. The sensors on the vest will send signals in the form of notifications, as well as warning alarms in the form of sound and vibration, when the user is detected to be experiencing early signs of fatigue,” he continued.

Not only does it offer many advanced features, but user comfort was also considered in its design. He revealed that Vest Health is made to be body-fitting with elastic and flexible materials, making it comfortable for users from all walks of life. However, Valdio also shared some of the challenges he and his team had to overcome. One of these challenges was the cost and limited workshop space.

“We had to overcome several challenges to bring this project to life. Among them, the cost of acquiring quality features and the limited availability of workshop space caused delays in finalizing the tool. Fortunately, UMM has always supported our innovation, allowing us to properly showcase it,” he said.

Finally, he hopes that Vest Health can be developed into an even better version in the future. He believes that UMM industrial engineering students can provide extraordinary innovations that meet the needs of both the industry and the wider community. Additionally, Valdio has high hopes that this innovation will help reduce the number of traffic accidents in Indonesia. (din/wil/mrh)
