Flood and landslide crashed Pacitan, East Java at the end of November. This disaster attracted the attention of Indonesian citizens especially the people in East Java including University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). That is why, UMM sent two volunteers who belonging to the Trauma Counseling Center (PKT) Faculty of Psychology of UMM on Tuesday (5/12) and Thursday (7/12) collaborated with Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) and Malang Psychology Association (HimPsi).
Rector of UMM, Fauzan said that this is a real action taken by UMM to Indonesia. He hoped that this program became an action to have a good relation among people in society and to care each other. He said, “What MDMC did is what UMM hopes for. It is like UMM mission, which is “From Muhammadiyah to the nation”.
The Dean of Psychology faculty, Muhammad Salis Yuniardi explained in detail that the purpose of PKT Psychology of UMM is to handle psychosocial cases caused by disasters or conflicts. He said, “PKT Psychology of UMM was established in 2001 and has handled many psychosocial cases such as DOM Aceh, Tsunami Aceh, Padang earthquake, Jogja earthquake, Jember riot, and flood and landslide in Pacitan”.
The volunteers sent are the alumni of Psychology faculty and under the lecturers’ supervision. Team 1 was sent to assess and identify the needs to handle the psychosocial cases there while Team 2 would bring the stuffs to handle directly the cases that have been reported by Team 1.
Sais said,” Handling psychosocial cases takes maximum 10 days. However, if responsive disaster extended, after 10 days the team on duty will be replaced by a new team, and we have ready with Team 3 if indeed required anyway”. Psychological Trauma in disaster certainly happens and needs comprehensive treatment. Salis hoped that the contribution of PTK Psychology faculty of UMM benefits for victims disaster.
Salis said,” We hope that this contribution will make students and alumni of Psychology faculty to have volunteerism souls and improve their competences in facing up reality in society”. (lus)
