The noisy voices of elementary school students could be heard clearly when the Bakti Sosial (BakSos) (Trans: the social service) group of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) arrived. Elementary school children were enthusiastic about reading hundreds of books from the Mobil Kamis Membaca (KaCa) (Trans: Thursday Reading car) owned by UMM. After previously visiting Tawangsari Village, Pujon, this time, the UMM Social Service group visited Sukopuro Village, Jabung, on April 17 2023.
One elementary school (SD) student, Frensiska, was delighted to learn and play with the UMM team. "It was really fun, we were taught a lot by the team, from learning English to counting in a fun way. We also sing together, and we were given hats as prizes for those who could answer the questions. Hopefully the team can play here again," said Frensiska.
The same enthusiasm was also seen from the villagers who participated in stunting counselling and free health checks provided by the UMM hospital team. Conversely, the UMM social service team also gave packages containing nutrient-rich food ingredients. This is intended so residents can also understand what foods are good for the body. Jumiati, one of the residents, appreciated this year's UMM Social Service. She felt this was an excellent place to gather and stay in touch.
"Alhamdulillah, this time UMM social service has really helped us, the mothers and also children. Apart from that, I saw children studying with UMM seniors. They look fun and interested. Hopefully it can be an encouragement for children to study harder," she said.
The Principal of SDN 1 Sukopuro, Umbar Suyono, conveyed the same thing. According to him, Mobil KaCa provides an increase in literacy. Children can read a series of exciting books that impress them, even if it's only for a moment. This certainly increases students' interest in reading.
"Stunting counseling and free health checks for villagers are also useful. Especially considering that our village had a high percentage of stunting. Hopefully programs like this can also be implemented in other villages," said Umar.

On the other hand, Social Service Coordinator, dr. Sri Adila Nurainiwati, Sp.KK explained that this social service activity was a recurring event for UMM every month of Ramadhan. For this year, the UMM social service team surveyed villages with high stunting locations.
"Because for the past two years UMM had a program to reduce stunting. And the area in Malang district with the highest stunting rate is one of them here," said the doctor, a lecturer at UMM Faculty of Medicine. (put/faq/wil)
