To enhance its students' English skills, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) successfully held an Innovation Bazaar through the Language Center's FLSP (Foreign Language for Specific Purposes) program on December 27. Interestingly, students were required to use English during transactions, serving as an effort to strengthen their language proficiency.

"This event is not just a platform to showcase students' creativity but also a means to test their English-speaking skills, particularly in the context of buying and selling transactions," said the bazaar coordinator, Moh. Kholilurrahman.

He explained that this program is an implementation of the Speaking 1 and 2 courses, specifically designed to hone students' speaking skills directly. In this bazaar, students not only practiced speaking but also demonstrated how to explain the products they were selling to buyers in English. The products sold were the result of the students' own innovations, produced with a strong spirit of entrepreneurship and high creativity.

"We want students to get used to speaking English in real-life situations, not just in the classroom. We encourage them to be more confident in using English, whether when speaking with classmates or with others," he stated.

This event became even more engaging with the direct interactions in English between students and buyers. The bazaar program has been held since 2022 and continues to grow each year. Every academic year, it successfully attracts significant attention. For students who face difficulties, they are encouraged to ask questions and learn how to use English effectively.

In addition to serving as a platform for language practice, this event also had a positive impact by providing additional income for students. Each group worked hard to promote and sell their products using creative marketing strategies. The products ranged from coffee, jelly drinks (jedot), salads, and light snacks to unique items like beadwork.

Meanwhile, one of the visitors, Khoirul Anam, stated that the bazaar provided an exciting platform for him to practice his English. He admitted that he usually felt shy about speaking English with his peers. However, this event became an enjoyable space for him to express his skills.

"Usually, when we speak English, there are always people who underestimate us or think we're showing off. That's why this bazaar challenges us and allows us to speak English freely. Plus, the products offered are cute and delicious. I hope this event continues every year," he concluded. (nam/wil/ind)
