The fisheries aspect is strategic for Indonesia. Therefore, fisheries graduates have good roles and opportunities in the future. One of them is an alumnus of the Aquaculture Study Program of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of UMM, Brilian Amanat Taqwa, who has succeeded in working in one of the programs of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia, which is the Infrastructure Improvement Fof Shrimp Aquaculture Project (IIFSAP).

“The program is a partnership between KKP and the Asian Development Bank. Its goal is to enhance the productivity, quality, profitability, and environmental sustainability of shrimp farming conducted by small-scale farmers,” Brilian, as he is commonly known, explained.

Having completed the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Shrimp at UMM, Brilian will manage this program until 2027 and will be stationed in Lampung Province as a facilitator. There, he will assist local shrimp farmers in improving both the quality and quantity of their shrimp production.

Brilian attributes his success in joining this program to his extensive experiences and learning during his time in the Aquaculture Program at UMM. He participated in various activities that deepened his understanding of fisheries, such as the Merdeka Campus MSIB, National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas), PKM, and the CoE Shrimp Class. His experience as a laboratory assistant in fisheries at UMM also affirmed his capabilities.

Moreover, several courses closely related to his current job were highly beneficial. After attending the preparatory sessions provided by the program organizers, he found that the material covered was similar to what he had studied during his time at UMM.

“Many of the courses were very helpful. For example, basics of aquaculture, water quality management, nutrition and feed management, and disease management have all been very useful for this program,” he said.

The alumnus from Banyumas mentioned that one of his most memorable experiences at UMM was participating in the CoE Shrimp program. He interned at a well-known company, PT. Suri Tani Pemuka, and found that the experiences and challenges he encountered during the internship were similar to those he faced in the field, which made adaptation easier.

“While studying, we must be prepared to learn and practice continuously. Don’t give up when faced with challenges and problems. Everything requires a process and doesn’t happen instantly, so remain consistent in your efforts to achieve your dreams,” he concluded. (*/wil/fajr)
