The Communication Science (Ikom) Study Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), organized the Communication Journalism Fest (CJ-Fest). The event was a collaboration between Public Relations practicum students and third-year journalism practicum students held at the Malang Creative Center (MCC) on Wednesday, June 20, 2024. It served as a platform for showcasing the creativity of young people through various means. Ten news portals featured thousands of works.

"This event is a showcase of the students' skills post-practicum. Those involved in journalism practicum gained experience in reporting, which they showcased at this event. At least ten news portals were covering different themes such as SMEs, healthy food, and others," explained the Head of the Communication Science Study Program (Kaprodi) at UMM, Nasrullah, S.Sos, M.Si.

Nasrullah emphasized that there were thousands of news articles produced across these ten news portals. Besides being a direct learning experience for students, the media outputs aim to provide additional education to the public.

"The reach of digital media is vast. Moreover, the diverse themes covered automatically ensure that the knowledge gained by students benefits not only their understanding, but also the general public," he added.

Interestingly, the works produced by students in the Ikom program at UMM, whether in journalism, public relations, or audio-video production, can be further developed post-practicum and integrated into their final projects. "This way, students don't have to struggle with their thesis and can directly develop their work during the practicum," he said.

Meanwhile, PR practicum supervisor Jamroji, M.Comms., added that CJ-Fest also included a 'Workshop & Journalism Project' attended by high school students from across Malang Raya. Participants gained in-depth knowledge of journalism and practical field experience. Moreover, attendees had the opportunity to receive a golden ticket to join UMM.

"These participants weren't just asked to sit and listen; they were encouraged to practice, ensuring that the knowledge they gained was practical. For example, they produced short journalistic videos, giving them insight into the activities of media professionals in the journalism world," he explained.

Aside from encouraging students' interest in journalism, CJ-Fest had a specific mission to showcase the competence of UMM's Ikom program to high school students. This included highlighting the professionalism of the teaching staff, the adequacy of laboratory facilities, and the extensive output of the Ikom program in its field.  (faq/wil/fajr)
