To enhance the quality of the Center of Excellence (CoE) program in koi fish and shrimp farming, the Aquaculture Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang discussed with the partners of the Business World and the Industrial World (DUDI). The discussion held on 8 February discussed a strategy to improve each party’s aspect.
One of the Business World and the Industrial World representatives, Ir. Hery Sudarmono, the CEO of the Ltd. Garin Agro Sejahtera, attended the meeting. He expressed his gratitude for having a chance to collaborate with UMM, primarily when the Faculty of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry of UMM provided the new idea. In fact, it impacts the company positively, mainly regarding human resources.
“So far, the actual action we have done is to facilitate students who are enthusiastic about shrimp farming to practice. Then they can acquire skills that align with industrial needs; primarily, the practice duration is long, lasting four to five months,” he said.

Hery continued his statement that the professional class in shrimp cultivation gives more understanding to students. It starts with sowing the shrimp seeds, cultivating, and harvesting. Students also have the same opportunity to get a decent job in the future because they already have adequate skills.
“I have collaborated with UMM for two periods, and soon, it will be the third. In total, dozens of students had already interned at my company. In the future, I not only want them to intern in my company in Java. Conversely, I will delegate them to intern in Sumatera or Celebes,” said Hery.
In his perspective, the CoE program of UMM is a brilliant idea made by the university itself and is sustainable. He primarily expects that there will be an extended collaboration. It is because shrimp technology is still developing, and a businessman/businesswoman still needs feedback from the campus.

On the same occasion, Deky Arisandy, the owner of the CV Indo Koi Malang, said that the CoE program of UMM, notably the koi fish farming class, is an alternative choice for students to learn about fish cultivation outside the regular class. The course is also prioritized for those who intend to be koi fish businessmen/businesswomen.
“I feel excited about this collaboration because many students who have finished their internship can write their undergraduate thesis. They even have started to grow business in koi fish farming. Hence, they can help us to develop this cultivation. Hopefully, more students will learn in my place to cultivate koi fish,” explained he.
Dr. Fauzan, M. Pd, the Rector of UMM, stated that the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry is the leading faculty in developing the CoE of the UMM program. It is not only on a regular basis but also a practical one. Furthermore, the professional class by the aquaculture department has been acknowledged by Sukardi Rinakit, a special staff member of the president of the Republic of Indonesia.
“This is a good innovation, but never stop doing new and beneficial things. Let’s give a positive impact on advancing the nation,” ended the Rector. (imh/ros/wil)
