Students of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) never cease to bring honour to the campus at prestigious international events. Most recently, Muhammad Zair Baitil Atiq, a student of the International Relations (IR) program, successfully brought home awards as the champion of Best Project, Best Participant, and Most Active Group in the Fully Funded Istanbul Youth Summit organized by Youth Break the Boundaries in Istanbul, Turkey, from March 3 to 7, 2024.
Zair, as he is fondly called, stated that the program focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which consist of 17 main points. However, for this occasion, the focus was on four points: Good Health and Well-Being (SDGs 3), Quality Education (SDGs 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDGs 8), and Climate Action (SDGs 13). In its execution, he was divided into several groups from various universities in different countries. Zair chose to focus on SDGs 13 and has been preparing several flagship programs since December 2023.

"We offer innovations for the benefit of society. One of these innovations is forming a community called Amerta Bumi, which aims to raise awareness among humans to engage in waste management. This breakthrough is also based on the research I conducted," he said.
Furthermore, Zair recounted that the results of the innovation preparation were presented directly at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Istanbul. During the four days of activities, he met 152 participants from 27 countries. "On the third day, I had the opportunity to present Amerta Bumi. Some interesting activities we offer include international webinars, content education, creating websites, prototype tools, and more. As the last day approached, I never expected to receive so many awards," he said.
The idea of Amerta Bumi is based on Zair's research. He found that the level of public concern in Southeast Asia is quite low, with only 30% of households segregating plastic waste. In Indonesia, the concern for waste segregation and creating a healthy environment is only 31%. "Until now, we have implemented international webinar programs discussing waste management to millennial and Gen Z friends. Especially considering they are the primary target of these discussions," he added.

In addition to utilizing this valuable opportunity, the fourth-semester student also visited historical sites in Istanbul, such as the Al-Fath Mausoleum, Hagia Sophia Museum, and Blue Mosque. According to him, he was fortunate to be able to participate in the program. "For fellow students, try to participate in various activities because the best investment is experience. Don't be afraid of failure because there are still many opportunities," Zair concluded. (ri/wil/fajr)
