The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is continuously serving and spreading benefits. However, some academicians also participate in serving the good of the nation. Similarly, what was done by Vritta Amroini Wahyudi, S.Si, M.Sc. with two other lecturers, she encouraged the people of Sragi Village, Blitar Regency, to create antioxidant herbal tea from corn silk. The first training was held on Saturday (28/8) by implementing strict health protocols.

Vritta, explained it all started when she became a speaker of student activity, KKN. initially, she was asked to develop the potential that exists in Sragi Village. “This village produces so much corn, but the corn silk is not utilized optimally. Therefore, the lecturer team and I wanted to try to take samples and get results that this material has high antioxidants like green tea,” she explained.

This finding makes Vritta believe that the brewed drink from corn silk can be a potential income. In addition, it is also able to have a positive impact on health. This content will help strengthen the immune system needed during a pandemic.

Furthermore, Vritta said that this activity aims to provide assistance related to functional beverage products and provide facilities for making and packaging products to become tea bags. "Later on, we will also monitor it until this product is ready and has certain conditions to apply for a permit," she said.

This food technology (ITP) lecturer hopes this service can synergize the Kampus Putih and the community. UMM, which has academics and students, is expected to provide practical knowledge with simple tools in developing the potential of citizens.

Meanwhile, as the Head of Sragi Village, Leni thanked UMM, who was responsible for this training. She appreciated that this product was from their own crops. "Corn hair which was initially only considered as waste, can now be used as a product that has economic value and is useful for health," she said.

Finally, she also hopes that this training can be the first step in making and marketing herbal tea from corn silk to a wide market. Thus, it can also provide employment opportunities for residents in the village. “This program can create attractive business opportunities. I am sure this herbal tea can be a superior product in Blitar Regency,” she concluded. (wil)
