Fish fodder is one of the highest expenses in koi farming. It can even reach around 60% of the total production cost. Fodder is also quite expensive because imported breeders' feed can reach 250 thousand rupiahs per kilogram, and koi growth feed reaches 50 thousand rupiahs per kilogram. This condition encouraged a team of lecturers from the Aquaculture study program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to produce an independent koi fish feed based on local raw materials.

One of the team members, Ganjar Adhywirawan, S.Pi. MP. explained that the local raw materials used are more affordable, have good nutritional content, and are suitable for koi fish. The ingredients used are fishmeal, magot flour, rice bran flour, worm flour, and spirulina.

"There are many benefits that can be obtained from this innovation, especially from the aspect of feed availability. Feed costs can be reduced and feed availability during the cultivation process can be fulfilled. Moreover, local raw materials are very abundant," said Ganjar, as he is often called.

The feed manufacturing stage begins with determining local raw materials. Then the feed formulations were prepared and produced using a koi feed molding machine. Next, it goes through the drying process and, finally, packaging. "We plan to mass produce this koi fish feed in September after a trial run in July," Ganjar explained.

The innovation and research on koi feed began in 2022 and was realized in 2023 through the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program (Trans: Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka) as a collaboration. This program is a collaboration between the Aquaculture Study Program, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), and a partner of the Dunia Usaha Dunia Industri (DUDI) (Trans: industrial world business world), CV. Indokoi Malang.

The development of this fodder is also inseparable from the Koi Center of Excellence established by the aquaculture study program. This fish fodder proves that CoE can provide innovations and breakthroughs to help koi breeders. Therefore, it does not only produce qualified human resources but also provides benefits to others.

Ganjar also emphasizes that the innovation in making koi fish fodder is the result of the research by Dr. Hany Handajani, S.Pi, M.Si, and a team of lecturers from the aquaculture study program. The effectiveness of using local ingredients is expected to provide more advantages in koi fish farming. So there is no need to worry about high expenses.

"The benefits of our fish fodder are more affordable. The selling price is also cheap, and it use of local-based raw materials, not imported materials," he concluded. (put/nia/wil)
