Mathematics is essential in every aspect of life, not only in academic and professional spheres. This paradigm gives new insight. Though math is considered complicated, it, in fact, can significantly impact daily life, as said by Dwi Reni Susanti, M. Pd., a mathematics education lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
According to her, the relevancy of math is not limited to formal situations but also extends to unrealized aspects of life. “Mathematics plays a crucial role in decision-making, problem-solving, and creativity-developing. Even, in something trivial, like making a cup of coffee, there are measurements and combinations that must be considered mathematically”, explained the lecturer.
A basic understanding of mathematics is central to everyday problem-solving skills: the ability to think creatively, thoroughly, and systematically in finding solutions. For example, Polya’s mathematics theory offers problem-solving stages: understanding a problem, planning a solution, implementing a plan, and rechecking.
Reni also said that algebra is one of the important basic science of mathematics, which manipulates math symbols. Understanding algebra enables individuals to tackle financial issues by formulating relevant mathematics equations.

“In the business world, algebra helps to formulate relationships between variables, like demand and product prices,” illustrated the lecturer.
Mathematics is also crucial in programming. The science of logic applied in algorithms is the foundation for understanding programming languages. Good mastery of math certainly assists someone in understanding programming logic, designing efficient algorithms, and solving problems in software development.
“That way, good applications and software and technological innovations will emerge," she said.
Mathematics is also believed to improve critical and analytical thinking skills. The positive side is having the ability to analyze problems in-depth, identify relevant patterns, and develop logical and measurable solutions.
“With math, an individual can decide more rationally, see various points of view, and evaluate the implications of each step taken,” concluded Reni. (imh/lai/wil)
