The University Muhammadiyah of Malang (UMM) encourages lecturers and students to develop literacy. This time, several lecturers and students of the Faculty of Psychology UMM compiled a book titled "Searching for Critical Pedagogy." This book was released last Monday (15/11).

As the initiator, Ahmad Sulaiman, S.Psi., M.Ed., said that this book began with a book review event at the Critical Reading Forum, the community he started. The book that was dissected was the book entitled "Education of the Oppressed" by Paul Freire. As a result of the discussions, the idea emerged to write critical pedagogical reflections. Then the collection of writings is combined into a book.

"The writings collected are not limited to lecturers. Several students contributed writings," he added.

Humada, his nickname, again explained that this book aims to popularize critical pedagogical learning models. This model is an alternative learning that humanizes the students. Also, encourage them to be active in the teaching carried out. Another thing in this book is how to determine to learn close to the surrounding life.

"Critical pedagogy is an alternative learning model that humanizes students and encourages them to be active in the life around them so that they can create solutions and foster a sense of empathy," he concluded.

In addition, another goal of this book is to straighten the meaning and understanding of critical pedagogy. Given the importance that has been spread in cyberspace, it is different from authentically understanding essential pedagogy. Critical pedagogy is understood as a crucial education model for power in cyberspace. According to Humada, there needs to be an alignment of meanings related to this vital pedagogy.

This Surabaya-born lecturer again explained that the main obstacle is ensuring that the writing remains on the path of studying critical pedagogy. According to him, several papers deviate slightly from the main discussion and topic. So it is necessary to have a maximum editing process while giving criticism and suggestions to the author.

Furthermore, Humada revealed that this book is the first work of a critical pedagogy project, which is planned to be followed up by the release of a second book next month. He hopes that this work can inspire lecturers, students, and the wider community to write their books. "Of course, with this book, I hope that the interest of students and lecturers to write will increase," concluded Humada.(cdr/haq/wil)
