The University Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) successfully hosted the 2024 East Java Halal Expo on Product & Industry (Jatim Happy) event on December 14-15. The event was organized directly by LP-UMKM and the Halal Institute of the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) of East Java to educate the public about the importance of halal products in the industrial world. East Java's Deputy Governor Emil Elistianto Dardak, Ph.D., who also opened the event, was in attendance.
Interestingly, East JavaHappy not only provided education through product expos, seminars, and workshops but also featured various competitions open to the public for free. These included photography contests, creative dance competitions, business plan competitions, coloring contests, Muslim fashion contests, and many others. This was a fun way to educate the public.

Additionally, the event emphasized the importance of having an open mind regarding the complex definition of halal. The Islamic economy or halal industry is broad, and it should not only focus on the food and beverage sector. According to Dardak, the Islamic finance sector is also a crucial topic in the halal context.
Dardak, who is also the Chairman of the Sharia Economic Community (MES) of East Java, highlighted the slow process of halal certification, especially post-pandemic, when the industrial sector's recovery in the country has not been fully maximized. This is due to changes in industry or business patterns. Therefore, he stressed the importance of implementing self-declaration by the public, including business owners or industries, as a solution to accelerate the halal certification process.
He hopes that Jatim(East Java) Happy 2024 will bring benefits and positive effects to the domestic halal product industry, so East Java can further excel in building the Islamic economic ecosystem and halal product industry sector. "We must be open to the issues and complaints faced by business owners. We, the MES management, collaborate with Muhammadiyah's autonomous bodies, which have extraordinary synergy. So, let's work together to build an extraordinary East Java," he conveyed.
On the other hand, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M. Si. expressed his appreciation for UMM being chosen as the host of Jatim Happy. In his speech, Nazar emphasized the three pillars of Muhammadiyah's progressive Islam: religious obedience, the desire to seek knowledge, and a high sense of humanity. According to him, Muhammadiyah has implemented these three components well to contribute to a good, strong, and resilient nation.
"This means, ideologically, Muhammadiyah's great goal is to uphold faith and good deeds, which will create a just and prosperous society," he said.

The event was also warmly welcomed by many participants, including Muhammad Mustofa Kamal, who took part in the photography competition at Jatim Happy 2024. He thoroughly enjoyed the competition, especially as it was his first time participating in such an event.
"I am very happy to be part of this competition. I also thank Jatim Happy 2024 for providing a platform for young photographers to hone their skills. Moreover, the theme is very relevant to Indonesia, with its large Muslim population," he concluded. (din/wil/fajr)
