By visualizing Muhammadiyah's values and principles in a documentary and drama film, the students of UMM did a film screening. The Muhammadiyah Art and Culture Event festival showed the Islamic and Muhammadiyah studies students’ six films. This event was conducted last December at the Bureau of General Administration Affairs halls.
The lecture advisor of Islamic and Muhammadiyah studies, Azhar Muttaqin, M. Ag., explained that the event was initiated by the Development Center of Islamic and Muhammadiyah Affairs and several students. The themes of the six showed films were Islamic and Muhammadiyah, Islamic music arts, and poetry musicalization. In addition, the agenda also showed the movie Jejak Langkah 2 Ulama (Translated: Milestones of Two Islamic Scholars), involving the Cultural Arts and Sports Institute and the Central Head of Muhammadiyah.
“The six films shown are purely students’ works. Initially, we planned to do a film screening ordinarily. However, the university highly supports our effort and initiates to develop the program into a festival. There will definitely be winners based on their works. Hopefully, this agenda can be an ongoing custom for all Islamic and Muhammadiyah students.”, Azhar asserted.
He said existing works can contribute to the culture call of Muhammadiyah and develop the Islamic and Muhammadiyah learning process. Azhar added that he and his staff will attempt to make the agenda a yearly event to encourage students’ creativity.
On the other hand, Vice Rector I of UMM, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M. Si. highly appreciates the agenda. He perceives that the film screening can enable lecturers to facilitate students’ needs, especially enhancing self-potency based on various passions.
“Our students are diverse. Some like art and cultures, while others like to discuss, and so on. Then, it can challenge the lecturers of Islamic and Muhammadiyah studies to be a creative educator. After this event ends, it turns out that not only the Communication Science Department students will make films, but also Islamic and Muhammadiyah students will. I feel excited and appreciate it. Then, the community of young filmmakers should increase so that it will facilitate art lovers’ skills as missionary messages.”, expressed this Sampang-born lecturer.
Furthermore, Era Sugiarso, the Cultural Arts and Sports Institute representative and the Central Head of Muhammadiyah, attended this festival. He explained that his staff, since 2017, has planned to have a new missionary focus through cinematography. So far, the Cultural Arts and Sports Institute have four films, one of them is Jejak Langkah 2 Ulama (Translated: Milestones of Two Islamic Scholars).
“I, of course, want students to be more active and more in spreading Islamic and Muhammadiyah calls. They may utilize various platforms, and one of them is film,” he ended. (imh/wil)
