A total of 1235 teachers in East Borneo have not completed the teacher certification process; hence, the East Borneo Secretariat team visited the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang to establish partnerships. The cooperation held last February aims to finish teacher certifications in East Borneo.
Didi Rusdiansyah, the Governor’s Expert Staff of Field Two says that the matter of teacher certification is urgently to accelerate, indeed. It is because by 2021-2025, 912 equivalent senior high school teachers in East Borneo will be retired.
“Previously, we have discussed with the Ministry of Education and Culture of East Kalimantan and gotten directions to encourage our teachers to join the Teacher Professional Education program. Then the selected teachers can be determined to be funded by the State or Regional Revenues and Expenditure Budget.” said Didi.
Didi expects the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FTTE) of UMM to be able to facilitate teachers in East Borneo to earn the teacher professional education certification, starting from selection preparation, implementation, and competency test preparation. He also targets the acceleration process to become 6 years, previously estimated to be 12 years.

On the same occasion, the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Trisakti Handayani, M.M. emphasizes that the FTTE of UMM is ready to facilitate the needs of East Borneo, especially if it is related to education matters since it aligns with the vision and mission of the FTTE to be the part of sustainable teacher professional development
“We realize that the synergy among central governments, regional governments, and universities is crucial, primarily to achieve the goals. To overcome the issue of lack of teachers in East Borneo, the teacher professional education program of UMM also prepares the pre-service scheme. It can be either implemented through the lecturing scheme at UMM or the fieldwork practice at schools in East Borneo, which lacks teachers,” the Dean asserted.
She adds that UMM and the Education Office of East Borneo will prepare profession certificate scheme for vocational high school students in East Borneo, so they can be directly equipped to work.

“Hopefully, this collaboration can significantly impact. University chancellors also will support the cooperation with the Regional Secretariat of East Borneo with the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education,” he ended. (imh/*/wil)
