6866 freshmen of Universty of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) began to enrol in the opening of Students Orientation (Pesmaba) at UMM helipad on Tuesday (8/9). The Students Orientation will be held until Saturday (12/9).

Among thousands of students, there were 86 foreign students from 24 countries comprising Afghanistan, Algeria, United States, Australia, Netherland, Bulgaria, India, Iraq, Japan, Germany, Cambodia, Malaysia, Morocco, Palestine, Poland, Czech Republic, Rumania, Singapore, Spain, Sudan, Thailand, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The rector of UMM Dr. Muhadjir Effendy MAP in his speech said that the pride of being the part of UMM should be maintained by the students for having competed with more than 22.000 applicants. “The pride should be realized by studying hard and being successful alumnus in the end,” he said.

Before closing his speech, Muhadjir sang the song ‘Sempurna’ by Andra and The Backbone by adding lyrics of UMM in it. “The blood of UMM flows in yours. The heartbeat of UMM beats in yours. UMM is a perfect choice for you,” said him followed by the singing of students.

After the speech, the students formed flash-mob lines shaping the phrase ‘LOVE UMM’ with red-white background. The Vice Rector III Dr. Diah Karmiyati, Psi explained that this formation describes UMM as a nationalistic university and also raises pride for freshmen as part of the Jas Merah Kampus Putih new generation. UMM has pioneered the red-white flash-mob since 2009. Starting from 2011, the flash-mob has been captured by aerial photography.

In the middle of the flash-mob forming, through the official twitter account of UMM @UMMcampus, the committee drove the freshmen tweeting and publicizing the opening event with the hash tag #PesmabaUMM2015 on Instagram and Twitter. The hash tag became the Indonesian trending topic (TTI) for more than one hour, exactly from 08.50 to 10.10 and 10.48 to 11.01.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of UMM Counselor Unit Prof. Dr. H.A. Malik Fadjar, M.Sc in his stadium general welcoming speech in UMM Dome emphasized that students are one of important forces for the sake of the nation. “Therefore, here in UMM there is a saying, ‘Student Today, Leader Tomorrow’”, he said.

Similar with Malik Fadjar, the Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR-RI) Dr. (HC) Zulkifli Hasan, SE MM in the stadium general themed ‘Memperkokoh Wawasan Kebangsaan dalam Menghadapi Tantangan Global’ said that it is the time for the nationalism and Pancasila to be actualized. “Now it is time for us to ask whether the values of Pancasila still relevant in this globalization era or not,” he said.

In the actualization of Pancasila value, Zulkifly proposed the47th Muhammadiyah Congress as example. “Muhammadiyah is one example of the implementation of the fourth principle. The representatives were chosen to participate the congress, discuss many things, reach the agreement and select the leader without any conflicts,” said him.

Before delivering the stadium general materials, Zulkifli was given the honorary jacket by the rector as the symbol of UMM honorary academician. In the previous occasion, the other guests who also received the honor were the Commander of TNI Moeldoko, the Vice President Jusuf Kalla and the Minister of Defense in SBY Cabinet, Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

The theme of nationalism is indeed attached to the UMM students orientation. This is relevant with the UMM tagline ‘From Muhammadiyah for Nation’ and the symbol of ‘Red Jacket, White Campus’ which symbolized UMM as the campus of nationalism. (zul/fid/han/t_far)
