The academic community at Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM) continues to be encouraged to achieve excellence. One of the latest successes is the team of students from the Mathematics Education Program at the White Campus, who won a silver medal at the Gebyar Nasional Essay Siswa dan Mahasiswa (Genesis) in August in Mataram. They wrote an essay and presented a poster on a unique and engaging math teaching media for junior high school students.

“In this case, we used a ludo game combined with mathematics and cards. The use of this teaching media makes the math learning atmosphere more engaging through fun gameplay. The goal of this teaching media is to enhance understanding in learning about spatial figures, such as remembering formulas and characteristics of geometric shapes,” said Annisa Khoirunnillah, one of the team members.

Mathematics is also related to the Ludo game, especially in terms of flat geometric material. This is seen through the application of flat geometry in the design of the game board, the use of coordinates to determine the position of the pieces, and the application of geometric transformations such as translation and rotation as the pieces move. Each number on the dice has an equal chance of appearing, teaching the basics of probability and statistics.

Additionally, players can use probability to make strategic decisions, such as which piece to move based on the possible outcomes of the dice roll. Players need to sum the numbers on the dice to determine how many steps a piece can take and calculate the remaining distance to reach the goal. Each number on the dice has an equal probability of appearing.

“This media can teach students the basics of probability and statistics. The path taken by the piece from the starting point to the endpoint can be analyzed as a path or cycle in a graph, providing insights into movement and strategy,” Annisa added.

She also mentioned that during the poster presentation session, the judges appreciated the teaching media they created. They also encouraged the team to develop an application or website for the game that could be easily accessed online across various platforms. She hopes this achievement can inspire other young people to innovate, create works, and excel. The success was not achieved alone; she was accompanied by other team members, namely Rahma Fitri Inadi, Aida Aulia Sekti Asih, Dwi Erlinawati, and Makrifatul Khoiriyah.  (*/Wil/fajr)
