Waste management and sorting processes in individual households in Indonesia are still rarely practiced. However, this activity is common in other countries, such as the United States and Japan. Taking note of this, a team of International Relations students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) embarked on a unique initiative in mid-December. They collaborated with Trash Hero Tumapel to teach mothers in Bulukerto Village how to create compost using Takakura baskets.

Aulia Ramadhani, one of the students, explained that composting is a biological process to decompose organic materials, ultimately producing products like humus, more commonly known as compost. The method they employed is the Takakura method from Japan. One of the primary tools of this method is a perforated plastic basket. They used diluted palm sugar water, along with chicken feed, soil, and organic waste.

"This outreach program doesn't just educate villagers on managing waste to create useful products. It also raises their awareness of the long-term benefits. It helps enhance people's thinking and consciousness about the importance of environmental preservation. One way is by implementing the Takakura basket method," Aulia explained.

According to her, this activity is a concrete example of how young people are environmentally conscious and strive to protect it. By involving other organizations, this initiative especially encourages other young individuals to contribute in various aspects, not only in the environment but also in economic, social, religious, and other fields. Additionally, this campaign was sponsored by the Batu City Environmental Agency and Warung Wak Breng.

"This outreach is also an implementation of the global social movement course taught by Mr. Ruly Inayah Ramadhoan. Through this program, we are more motivated to generate other beneficial activities. I'm grateful that UMM continues to push us to maximize our potential and opportunities," she added.

In executing this activity, Aulia wasn't alone; other fellow students accompanied her. Among them were Tuti Septichana, Fadiatul Maghfiroh, Navisa Septia, Liony Putri, Nur Rizqiah, Aisya Nazelina, Fariz Yanuar, Mareza Zulvan, and Dimas Satria.  (*/Wil/Fajr)
