Ramadan has just ended. Muslims are also feeling euphoric about Eid al-Fitr in Shawwal. Maintaining the quality of worship is already done during Ramadan, so the rate of being a Muslim doesn't decrease, like doing Shawwal fasting recommended by the Prophet PBUH.

In response, UMM's Faculty of Islamic Studies lecturer states her explanation. Shawwal fasting is a 6-day fast during the month. Cited from a hadith narrated by Muslim, the sunnah fasting of Shawwal has a great reward. Ramadan fasting, followed by a complete 6-day Shawwal fasting, is equal to the rewards of a year of fasting.

Then, what if someone intends to do 6-day Shawwal fasting while still missing Ramadan fasts? Which one takes precedence and priority?

Luci says there are three perspectives of clerics to do this Shawwal fast. The first says making up missed Ramadan fasting comes first, followed by Shawwal fasting. Some allow performing Shawwal fasting first. Some even combine the intentions of both fastings.

"However, it's better to compensate for missed Ramadan fasting first because it's obligatory. Moreover, sunnah deeds won't be accepted if the mandatory ones haven't been performed," as she suggests.

Hence, making up missed Ramadan fasting comes first since it's required. Primarily, it is highly recommended to do this as soon as possible. Because if it's delayed, it's feared that the concerned person will forget the obligation until the next Ramadan.

"Although Shawwal fasting is sunnah, it is strongly recommended by the Prophet PBUH. For those who are capable; it's better to perform Shawwal fasting for 6 days,". (imh/wil)
