Healing has become a prevalent trend lately, especially among Generations Y and Z. There is even a notion that Generations Y and Z are the generations that need healing the most compared to other generations. Retno Firdiyanti, S.Psi., M.Psi., a lecturer in Psychology at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), explains that the meaning of healing in psychological constructs differs from the understanding of the general public.
In the realm of psychology, healing refers to the process of mental healing. Whereas the healing understood by Generation Y and Z, in general, is an effort to please oneself, with a direction more towards seeking happiness and hedonism.
"In the context of psychology, healing is the process of healing mental illnesses and other mental issues. In contrast, the healing interpreted by Generation Y and Z is more towards recreation," explained Retno, as she is commonly called.

There is a view that regards Gen Y and Z as weak generations, unable to bear burdens, and always in need of healing. However, if we reflect on previous generations, they also had coping stress mechanisms. Thus, this cannot be interpreted as a weakness because the challenges faced by each generation are different.
The terms Generation Y and Z refer to generational nicknames based on birth years. Gen Y or millennials are those born between 1981-1996, while Gen Z refers to the group born between 1997-2012. Generation Y was born during the transition from the analogue to the digital world. Hence, they have characteristics and digital adaptation abilities. Understandably, Generation Y may have better adaptability skills than previous generations. Meanwhile, Generation Z, they were born into technology. They have been exposed to the digital world, offering various conveniences, since childhood.
"Therefore, they need parenting that teaches them that not everything can be instant. We also need to learn a bit about the process of obtaining something and learn to control ourselves when utilizing digital technology," she concluded.
So, is it only Generations Y and Z that need healing? If healing means recreation, then all generations need healing. To think clearly and relieve stress, every generation needs recreation. However, not all problems are solved by recreation.

There are psychological issues rooted in not being heard. The remedy for this is to talk to someone willing to listen. Then, some have problems because they don't have time to talk to themselves.
