The international world is facing the challenges of climate change, some of which are the clean water and food crises. To overcome this problem, the government began to take mitigation. It was conveyed by the Secretary General (Secretary General) of PUPR, Ir. Mohammad Zainal Fatah, at the General Stadium event held by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on Monday (20/6).

Furthermore, Zainal said through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia (PUPR), the government has begun to build several infrastructures to regulate food and water sufficiency in Indonesia. According to him, global water needs will continue to increase by 55% until 2050.

Many factors affect the increase in water demand, such as changes in agricultural systems, urban governance, and lifestyle. “Although the water demand is increasing, the availability of clean water is running low. Many rivers and lakes have been polluted. Overall, Indonesia is still at a safe stage, symbolized by the green color. However, some areas, such as the islands of Java and Sulawesi, have become yellow areas. This is what we need to be aware of in the future,” said the man from Pamekasan.

Zainal said that PUPR had built a dam to overcome the impending water crisis. Rain in Indonesia can produce 2.73 trillion cubic meters of water per year. Still, the water that is accommodated and suitable for use is only 50 cubic meters per year. It is left behind North America, which can accommodate water reserves of 6000 cubic meters of water per year, or Australia, which can store as much as 4700 cubic meters of water per year.

"The construction of this dam will be the government's solution to maintain the availability of clean water in Indonesia. Currently, we have completed the construction of 20 dams. We plan to build a total of 61 dams by 2024. In addition, to maintain food availability, the government has also established food production areas. This area aims to support regional and national food needs," said Zainal.

Regarding the public's response to massive development, Zainal said that infrastructure development in Indonesia has four leading roles. First, as a cross-history of civilization in the future. The second is to increase competitiveness with other countries. The third is as equal distribution of social justice in Indonesia. Finally, with a lot of existing infrastructure, it is hoped to facilitate access between regions and strengthen national unity.

On the other hand, the Chancellor of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd, said that to prepare future students, UMM White Campus has prepared two learning schemes. The first is academic learning that takes place during lectures. Second, leadership competencies are built in organizations and activities such as this general stadium. The potential and talents of students are also continuously supported. One of the ways is by establishing various Centers of Excellence (CoE).

"In addition to supporting student talent, this CoE program is here to increase interaction between students and the industrial world. This CoE can be followed by all students and is not limited to the student's major," he concluded. (cdr/syi/wil)
