To improve students' insights and skills about shrimp, the Aquaculture Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) invited the management of the Shrimp Club Indonesia to a guest lecture at the end of December. This agenda is followed by dozens of participants who are also part of the Center of Excellence (CoE), who discuss the challenges and efforts so that the shrimp farmed can survive and be good.
Presenter Mila Ayu Ambarsari, M.Pi. said there are several challenges generally faced by the shrimp industry. For example, related to the management of the aquatic environment in Indonesia, the need for competent human resources in the shrimp industry is limited, and there is high attacks of shrimp diseases (vibrio, AHPNP) and others. This shrimp virus is high enough to cause a decrease in production capacity or crop failure.

Meanwhile, there are also a series of opportunities in the shrimp industry. One of them is the opportunity for the export industry which is still very high. Even domestic shrimp needs are still considered insufficient or limited. The existence of a government program that focuses on food security is an interesting thing to be used as a motivation to increase the production of export-quality shrimp industry. “This means that currently, the shrimp industry does require competent human resources or those who have the weight to meet the targets of tapangan resilience, especially in the field of blue economy,” she said.
Meanwhile, Shrimp CoE coordinator Ganjar Adhywirawan Sutarjo, S.Pi, M.Si. said that fisheries students must be able to equip themselves and actively participate in various competency certifications. Next, they must be able to build networking, discipline, and perseverance. That way, students' abilities will be tested and trusted.
Through the guest lecture, Ganjar hopes that UMM fisheries students will broaden their understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the shrimp industry, both today and in the future. “In principle, the opportunities and job prospects in the shrimp industry are very high. On the other hand, the industry requires student competence that meets company standards in order to achieve production targets. That's why UMM Shrimp CoE is here to help students meet those standards,” said Ganjar.
