Indonesian must develop and internalize the values of global humanitarian, as said by the Vice Chairman of the Institute for Strategic Studies and Partnerships Affairs of Muhammadiyah Center Leadership, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Najib Burhani, M.A. in the Eid al-Fitr sermon at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang on April 21, 2023.

Furthermore, Najib explained that Ramadan is the best moment to enhance self-quality as a Muslim — including applying values inside, which has covered the importance of global humanity. The matter which equalizes humans in the presence of Allah regardless of race, gender, class, etc.

The Prophet also said if we are merciful to the people of the earth, Allah will indeed show mercy to them. "Currently, the world is facing various issues related to human rights, conflict, poverty, discrimination, etc. Then, mankind and Muslims must fight for humanitarian values," said he.

The Vice Chairman also explained the news that some fields weren't allowed to pray in, such as in Pekalongan and Sukabumi. Then, it was permitted when many parties discussed it — including the obstacles to constructing a mosque in Aceh in 2022. He underlines that many lessons can be taken from the events above.

One of them is that Muhammadiyah citizens can feel how they become a minority and are discriminated against, and their freedom is hindered. "In reality, there are other groups and religions which may feel what we experience. It's even worse. Some have their places of worship sealed, can't bury their dead in a public cemetery, are expelled due to different beliefs, are isolated, etc. It also hinders education access and careers," he said in the sermon.

Muhammadiyah is lucky to be a majority. They can argue and advocate when there are unpleasant things and inappropriate policies. Muhammadiyah can speak up and collaborate with journalists to deliver their arguments. However, minority groups can't exercise that capability and discretion.

Hence, the development of human values must always be continuously promoted. The first is because it is the order of Allah and the guidance of Prophet PBUH, so it must always be done. Second, due to its various congresses, Muhammadiyah issued recommendations related to humanity, nationality, and community to create a peaceful life.

"The last is to see the reality that restrictions on rights and discrimination can be experienced by anyone. Muslims are also a minority in various countries. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, they are the majority. Then, we should be an example for another country to love those who are minorities," he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Rector of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., expects what has been done during Ramadan to turn Muslims into better people—the ones who humanize humans and those who are pious.

"Hopefully we can maintain the quality of our worship and attitudes that have been fostered in Ramadan. The enthusiasm for Eid prayer this time is also extraordinary. May it also be accompanied by goodness in the future," he concluded. (imh/wil)
