The Communication Science of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang is actively developing various regions' potential through branding. There are dozens of areas that are being worked on in this activity. One is the Pertirtaan Nawonggo site, which is located in Ngawonggo Village, Tajinan District, Malang. Now, visitors are not only traveling but can also learn the process of asah, asih, and asuh. They also get free food without having to pay.
There is also Sang Kelana, a mini cafe using a VW Combi that conducts a campaign to buy coffee while exchanging garbage. Then also Campervan Malang, which provides a line of authentic old cars such as VW Combi for tourists to tour hidden gems in Malang. Even Ikom UMM students have also successfully organized a national event with the Indonesian onthel bicycle community (Kosti) Malang and upgraded Kaliandra Batu Adventure, which provides a means of enjoying the scenery of Jengkoang Batu by driving a Jeep.

One of these works originated from the concern of the two department lecturers: Jamroji, S.Sos, M.Comms. and Maharina Novia Zahro, M.Ikom. They are committed to preparing students ready to work when they graduate. Maharina said the UMM practicum that attracts clients from outside the campus has been running since 2010. The Communication Science lecturer team directs students to find problem formulations and solutions yearly.
"One of the ways we create new innovations is by combining two practicum processes. In the first practicum stage, students are asked to conduct research to produce a proposal. Then in the second practicum stage in the next semester, students can do a demonstration of the results of research and proposals," said Maharina.

This year, the practicum system did not use a thematic approach so that students could look for broader relationships. More than 28 groups attracted various clients from outside the campus. Each practicum group is also free to look for volunteers from other fellow students to help implement the event.
In addition to those mentioned above, Maharina said that the projects being developed this year focus on locations in East Java, especially Malang City. For example, Lumbung Stroberi tourism, Rumah Kelinci tourism, Bumiaji Village, and many other places. In addition, there is also the Rumah Kinasih Foundation in Blitar.
"One interesting thing is the Rumah Kinasih Foundation. We intensified the branding because the foundation houses people with disabilities. Currently, the student team carries out daily activities in the form of ecoprint batik. Apparently, this activity is one of the therapies for disabled friends. The turnover earned can also be worth hundreds of millions each month," she said.
Maharina also explained that the success of each group in solving problems depends on how data, information, and research results are obtained. The practicum system that Ikom UMM does not only demands obligations and values for students but also moral responsibility towards clients. This Communication Science lecturer hopes that students can make the most of the practicum and develop experience and knowledge in soft and hard skills so that they are later ready to enter the professional world.
"Additionally, we expect the developed location to be able to be used as a place to learn from each other. More importantly, it can provide benefits to the wider community," she concluded. (imh/wil)
