Under the theme "One Nation, One Soul, One Indonesia," thousands of participants celebrated Indonesia's 79th Independence Day with a healthy walk at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The event, themed "Environmental Care Healthy Walk," also encouraged all participants to take care of the environment by picking up trash along the walking route. Fadjar Ramdhani Setyawan, S.H., M.H., the event's coordinator, stated that this initiative is part of UMM's commitment to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This Independence Day healthy walk is an annual campus event, and every year, it has its unique features. This year, the uniqueness is expected to have a lasting effect, namely fostering a love for the environment and cleanliness. While walking, participants are also encouraged to pick up plastic waste along the way,” he said..

Interestingly, participants who collect the most plastic waste will receive a special door prize. Additionally, the use of paper coupons was eliminated to minimize waste production. Instead, faculty and staff used fingerprint attendance, while students used their student identification numbers (NIM).
In addition to the fun walk, Dhani explained that the Independence Day festivities at the White Campus (UMM) also included various competitions, ranging from video games and creative content to water duck racing. These competitions were participated in by the entire UMM academic community, not only as entertainment but also as a way to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among the community, considering the large number of individuals at UMM.

“UMM has a large community, and sometimes they are not well-acquainted with members from different units. Not to mention the thousands of students. So, we intentionally offer a variety of competitions to help them get to know each other better. In line with our tagline, we are one nation, one soul, and one Indonesia,” he explained.
On the other hand, Drs. Wakidi, Vice Chairman of UMM's Daily Executive Board (BPH), in his speech, stated that Indonesia's Independence Day is a special moment, given that Indonesia is now 79 years old. According to him, this occasion should be celebrated together with joy. He also reminded everyone to always live in harmony, considering that we are all part of one Indonesia.
“We are one nation, one soul, and one Indonesia. Let's join hands together in welcoming this Independence Day. We should remember the heroes who worked hand in hand to fight for independence. Therefore, today we must also work hand in hand to uphold that independence,” he said. (faq/fajr)
