Encounter Ramadan in a country with Muslim minorities is a challenge in itself. Bayu Dharmala, a lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) currently pursuing his studies at the University of Arizona, feels the same. This year will be the second year of fasting in Uncle Sam's country.

Bayu, his nickname, thinks he has enjoyed Ramadan quite well in America this year. Especially now, he joined a Muslim community near where he lives, namely Tucson. According to him, the community is like a powerful medicine to cure his longing for the homeland for him.

"One of it is the food. There are various snacks and culinary from various countries, including Indonesia. Even though it's not as noisy as at home, Alhamduillah I can enjoy typical food such as meatballs, soup, and even satay," he said.

Bayu said that he had many positive impacts while joining the Muslim community. There are many religious activities, such as reading the Alquran together to studies that are suitable for him to listen to. Moreover, many citizens of other countries came and greeted each other.

Apart from breaking his fast with the Muslim community in Tucson City, Bayu also often visits the Islamic Center of Tucson (ICT). This cannot be separated from easy access to get to ICT. Usually, he uses city buses as transportation.

"I also often buy groceries to the store. For example, like chicken, beef, to other spices. At least it can be used as stock for suhoor or breaking the fast with other friends," he said.

According to him, his decision to cook was the right thing. Therefore, Bayu can ensure it is halal, especially regarding ingredients and seasonings. But, if he doesn't have time, the man from Pasuruan also breaks his fast at a restaurant or place to eat by first asking the seller about the halal status of the food.

Bayu also feels that Ramadan has helped him to become a better human being. It is even thought that he is pushing himself to study harder and be able to graduate immediately from the study process that is being pursued.

"Fasting and Ramadan are not only for worship, but also to improve relations with humans. When both are able to be done, it feels like what we hope for and want is increasingly being granted by Allah SWT. Don't use fasting as an excuse to be unproductive," he concluded. (put/ri/wil)
