Tips for Fluent Public Speaking by UMM's Communication Lecturers

The ability and art of communication or public speaking are essential for modern society today. Not only for those who work in professional fields or are public figures, but this skill is also necessary for many people. This was conveyed by Rahmania Santoso M.Ikom, a Communication Science Lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM).

"Public speaking is a must-learn skill for everyone because it is a fundamental ability that will greatly influence life. The characteristics of introversion and extroversion are not reasons to avoid practicing public speaking," she said.

According to her, public speaking is an important thing to learn. In carrying out professional jobs such as teachers, doctors, pharmacists, managers, traders, and farmers, this skill must be possessed. So that communication can be better established and work can be smoother.

"For example, a doctor who cannot communicate with their patients or a teacher who cannot explain lessons well to their students. It could also be a merchant who cannot explain their merchandise. This will be considered inadequate, and the results of their work will be less than optimal," she explained.

There are several important things about public speaking. However, these can be acquired through practice and experience. Some of them include material preparation, stage mastery, body language, audience recognition, practicing before speaking, and attitude when facing specific objects. 

"One unique tip for practicing public speaking is to do facial exercises. Also, getting used to speaking alone in front of a mirror before performing can help," she added.

In conclusion, this woman, who often serves as an MC, emphasized that there is no need to worry about failure and mistakes when speaking in front of the public, especially during the learning phase. What is most important is how to overcome and correct the mistakes that have been made.

"Failure, mistakes, and nervousness are normal. In fact, by making mistakes, we become aware of our shortcomings and better prepare ourselves for future appearances on stage," she added, concluding. (rin/wil)
