Proud news came from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) student team. They are Yasmin Zakiyyatuzzahra and team, Zulfia Rahmawati Utami and Jesica Lucky Mar'atus Sholiha, who successfully won 3rd place in Scientific Essays at the 2nd Jember Dentistry Festival, Jember, in early November.
The three raised the theme of herbal medicine from a religious perspective. The focus is the effectiveness of giving Black Seed in treating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, it also examines the Islamic view of Black Seed as herbal medicine.
The Black Seed is one of the most famous herbal plants in Indonesia. It is even believed to cure various diseases, one of which is to support the therapy of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In Indonesia, diabetes mellitus, the number 3 non-communicable disease, is the most common, with 19.47 million sufferers. With a population of 179.72 million, the prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia is 10.6%.
"So we try to provide innovation and research things that support the therapy of this disease, one of which is through herbal plants. In addition, it is narrated in a hadith by Bukhari that Black Seed is believed to be able to cure various diseases since the time of the Prophet, "added Yasmin.
He explained that they had prepared themselves long ago. Some steps are determining the theme, searching for literature, and compiling an essay outline, even by practicing public speaking and presentations. They feel lucky because the UMM Campus always supports the potential of its students by forming LSOs and student activity units (UKM). For example, the Scientific Discussion Forum UKM often gives birth to outstanding students.
They are also grateful to be able to participate in the event because they can get to know many friends. That way, many new ideas, and insights can be developed when returning to campus. Moreover, this is their first competition, and they are proud of the results.
"I think our victory is not only a trigger for the team and me but also should be a motivation for other fellow students to contribute and make the campus proud at various levels," she said. (cdr/rah/sil/wil)
