The karate contingent of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) managed to win five medals in the 2021 UMM Championship national match last Saturday (13/11). A total of 12 karate contingents consisting of 73 student karate athletes from all over Indonesia were involved in the event. Because of the medal achievement, UMM becomes the second overall champion in the karate branch.

The five medals consisted of one gold medal, one silver medal, and four bronze medals in more detail. The gold medal was presented by Ari Galang, Nur Ilham, and Akbar, who won the gold medal in the men's exhibition Kata Beregu category. All of the White Campus karatekas who presented their best achievements were the delegates from UKM Inkado UMM.

Vice-Rector 3 UMM Dr. Nur Subeki, ST, MT, said karate is one of the competitions to be completed in the 2021 UMM Championship. He said that around 26 sports and art competitions would have competed in this national match. "Besides karate, there are also e-sports, MTQ, virtual run, traditional dance, ONMIPA, business plans, debate competitions, short fiction, podcasts, and others.

Chairman of the Indonesian Karate-Do Federation (FORKI) Malang City, Mohammad Anas S.T., appreciated UMM's national karate event. According to him, the pandemic has hampered karate. Various activities and agendas that were planned could not be appropriately implemented. This UMM competition is the second event on campuses throughout Malang.

"Thank you, UMM, for providing a platform to revive karateka activities that have been suspended due to the pandemic. Hopefully, in the future, competitions like this can be held again so that the stretching and spirit of karate can be widely spread, "said Anas.

"So even though it is still in a pandemic situation, it does not limit the enthusiasm of the academic community to make productive and achievement activities," he said.

Meanwhile, UMM Inkado Coach Ary Bahtiar, S. P, M.Si said this karate match was held virtual because it was still in a pandemic atmosphere. The participants were judged based on virtual karate motion records. He also noted that UMM White Campus through UKM Inkado sent 29 athletes in various categories.

"Thank God, thanks to hard work and intensive training, we managed to get the second overall winner in this competition. Hopefully, my fellow students can continue to learn and improve their abilities. That way, various achievements will accompany it," Ary continued.(cdr/wil)
