A tragic and shocking incident occurred in Indonesia recently. A child killed his father and grandmother, while his mother is in critical condition. This event raised significant questions about what could have driven such actions. Hudaniah, S.Psi., M.Si., a Psychology lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), shared her perspective on the case.
Hudaniah stated that, based on media reports, the perpetrator claimed to have heard voices, which he described as auditory hallucinations. However, she emphasized that this alone is not enough to confirm the presence of a psychological disorder. "To diagnose someone with a psychological disorder, a thorough assessment is necessary. We cannot solely rely on media statements or one-sided confessions, especially because a diagnosis of hallucinations requires further confirmation from experts through interviews and tests," she explained.

In an interview, Hudaniah also revealed that the perpetrator had visited a psychiatrist four times on his mother's initiative. Additionally, the perpetrator was reported to have long-term insomnia. "Difficulty sleeping can be one of the triggers for psychological stress, but it is important to emphasize that extreme actions like murder are not caused by just one factor. They can be influenced by how a person learns to cope with stress from their social environment, especially their family. In general, such behavior is the result of the accumulation of various pressures," she said.
She highlighted that unlawful behavior in children does not emerge suddenly. There are usually signs beforehand, such as becoming more withdrawn or easily irritated. Hudaniah also stressed the importance of parenting patterns and social factors in shaping a child's behavior. "Children learn from their closest environment, especially their parents, about how to solve problems. When there are no positive examples, they might look for references from social media or other environments that are not always constructive," she added.
Traumatic experiences or unresolved pressures from the past can also trigger negative behavior in children. If these experiences are not addressed or communicated, they can become heavy burdens for the child. To address cases like this, Hudaniah emphasized the importance of an integrative approach. The solution should not only focus on the perpetrator but also involve their family and social environment.
"An integrative approach includes psychological therapy, social support, and medical interventions if needed. For example, if a neurological disorder is found, pharmacological therapy could be one solution," she explained.

She also stressed the importance of the role of social institutions and the government in providing counseling services for families under pressure. Services such as counseling at health centers or support communities can help families face problems more positively.
Hudaniah hopes that similar tragedies do not recur. She urged all parties, from families to the government, to strengthen support systems for children and families. "Issues like this cannot be solved in isolation. A multi-faceted approach is needed, from family and community to government policies. This way, we can address the problem comprehensively and prevent similar incidents from happening again," she concluded. (vin/wil/fajr)
