Cool! UMM Students Created an Air Quality Detection Tool

The air is vital for life. The good air quality will definitely impact a healthy living’s life, and so will the bad one. Therefore, the Electrical Engineering students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) created an air quality detection tool. Uniquely, this device can inform computers and cell phones through an application and email about air quality in real-time. It can even measure oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonium, and temperature.

Taris Fakhran Hawarai, the team coordinator, said that this detection tool utilizes fuzzy logic programming as a decision-maker. Therefore, this device can determine whether the air quality is superb or awful. On the other hand, the team uses international standard indicators for this tool.

"At least, there are 27 fuzzy rules that will process the mq135 sensor. From there, we can detect the levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonium found at the location. This is followed by providing a decision regarding the existing air quality index, ranging from good, moderate, to bad levels. Then, the tool also provides notifications on the Blink application on cell phones and computers and messages via email," he explained.

This tool has also been tested in various locations in Malang City, including Sigura-gura. Taris asserts that the accuracy of his instrument is in the range of 90% by comparing the tool with existing air detection devices and real-time data on air temperature and humidity from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia [Trans.: Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG)].

“So far, the error rate is less than 10%. When compared to the the BMKG’s humidity and temperature data, there is only a 5-percent difference,” added Taris.

Furthermore, the air detection tool only needs low power to operate—using 5 volts or a lithium-ion battery. The production cost is also quite affordable at around IDR 500,000. They will later develop this device by creating a special website that can be accessed freely by the general public. The tool's placement point will also be increased to expand its reach.
