The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to lead in innovation. Recently, Kampus Putih kicked off the Basic Digital Technology Training Program (PDTD), which will be provided to all new students of Gen.24 UMM. To start this program, the Bureau of Systems, Information, and Digitalization (BSID) organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) for lecturers and instructors who will become the teaching staff and practical guides for digital technology. The ToT activities began on September 4, 2024.

Dr. Ir. Suyatno, M.Si., Head of BSID UMM, stated that globalization has significantly impacted changes in daily life, including shifts in job types driven by digital technology. Therefore, to prepare students and graduates, UMM equips them with digital technology skills. UMM graduates will gain additional competency in Python programming language, which was chosen for its relative ease of understanding by all students, even those not from the Informatics program.

“The goal is for students to understand and master coding in a specific programming language and then be able to implement it in the workplace,” he emphasized.

Suyatno explained that this agenda aims for new students to learn Python programming, practice it, and develop information system projects using Python. “The material will cover basic programming concepts, general Python knowledge, fundamental structures and operations, data analysis and visualization, and more. Thus, students are expected to be able to create with Python,” he said.

All new undergraduate and vocational students for the academic year 2024/2025 will participate in this program. Running from October 2024 to February 2025, the program is expected to encourage young people to innovate and provide solutions to societal problems. The instructors will include professional lecturers and a range of practitioners. The Python programming material will be taught progressively, from basic to advanced and professional levels, integrated into the curricula of each program.

“This represents a new breakthrough in education. Not only Informatics students will learn programming languages, but all students across various programs will be able to understand and use it in their respective fields. As far as we know, UMM might be the only institution offering such a program. We hope the knowledge gained will be well-utilized, benefiting both the students themselves and the community,” he concluded.  (Wil/Fajr)
