Indonesia currently requires a strong adhesive force to knit unity. It was conveyed by the General Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive (PP), Prof. Dr. Haedar Nasir, M.Si., in his oration to commemorate Youth Pledge Day on October 28, 2022. The event was organized by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and attended by thousands of academics and guests.
Furthermore, Haedar said that in the body of the Indonesian nation, there is currently a virus of division that leads to division due to differences in contradictory political choices. According to him, there is nothing wrong with differences in political decisions. On the other hand, political diversity is a sign of the life of democracy and diversity in the nation and state.
"Political differences become a problem if accompanied by a zero-sum game attitude or absolute win-lose. So a hard and extreme political attitude was born. The winner feels empowered, while the loser holds a burning grudge. At this point, politics becomes a virus that divides and does not unify the nation," he stressed.

He explained that if Indonesia's unity is to remain woven in all national dynamics, it is necessary to have a moderate and moderate attitude in the state. Not only by one party but also by all citizens and groups. Politics must be a pillar of unity, not a dividing factor.
"Soekarno, in his June 1, 2045, emphasized that the Indonesian state is not one country for one person or group. But Indonesia is a country for all, one for all, all for one. So we must take care of the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika building together. Indonesia's basic buildings must be constructed with a moderate spirit and outlook. Stay away from extreme radical views that divide. Even with the 2024 election, it must be a joint commitment to unite the nation and end the division of national politics," he said.
Haedar encourages the younger generation and millennials to become national unity and progress actors. One is through social media and public spaces, which are used as an arena for fellow citizens. Striving to cultivate a mindset, attitude, and action that even though they have different backgrounds, they are brothers so they can live together in harmony, peace, tolerance, and progress.
He emphasized that armed with solid and authentic unity, Indonesia would be able to become a developed country and nation. It is also a significant milestone for living on an equal footing with other nations on the world stage. Haedar is also optimistic that Indonesia's potential for unity is greater than the virus of division. It cannot be separated from the existence of common sense, morals, and a shared awareness to unite.
"Grow exemplary and statesmanship in every elite and citizen of the nation. Place Indonesia's interests above self-legacy, cronies, group dynasties, and self-will. Make Pancasila, religion, and the noble culture of the nation the main basis in knitting unity towards a progressive Indonesia," said Haedar.
On the same occasion, the Rector of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., said national unity will bring Indonesia to a golden age in 2045. However, efforts needed to be developed early on to get the best results. There must be mental reforms in society, such as ways of thinking, speaking well, and growing inclusiveness.
"Through this commemoration of the Youth Pledge, we must develop a positive, productive, and progressive nature of speech. Stop the negative talk and bring division. Let us unite towards a progressive Indonesia," he said.
Also, delivering speeches from two UMM students, Muthia Maharani and Rezatullah, was on the agenda. Muthia, who comes from Maluku, invites youth to contribute and be involved in the development process in various aspects—committed to being an example of honesty, justice, intelligence, moral elegance, and a brilliant generation.
While Reza emphasized that heroes fought for independence in the past, youth must rise up to build civilization. If the Youth Pledge is declared because of the need for unity, today's youth must fill it with cooperation, peace, and justice.
Interestingly, the Marching Band was presented to commemorate the Youth Pledge at UMM. Although the student activity unit (UKM) has just been inaugurated, they will also perform and enliven the 48th Muhammadiyah Congress in Solo in mid-November 2022. (cdr/wil)
