"Qurban" does not only have a religious value but also deep social meaning. It was conveyed by the Chairman of the Tarjih and Tajdid PP Muhammadiyah Council, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Anwar, M.A., at the Eid al-Adha sermon at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) last Saturday (9/7). At this moment, Syamsul said that Muslims should not regard it as a mere worship ritual. More than that, it also aims to strengthen faith and strengthen spiritual and moral integration.

"The Messenger of Allah said: A person's faith is not perfect until he loves others as he loves himself. If we see, the order for implementing the sacrifice in the letter Alkautsar is also juxtaposed with the word prayer. It means that ritual worship alone is not enough. There needs to be a policy of social involvement in the community," he said.

Syamsul, his nickname, continued that although Islamic civilization is almost 1500 years old, there is no single calendar system. It often results in different dates for worship. Like the beginning of fasting, the time of Eid prayer to Eid al-Adha.

"This happened not only because of differences in fiqh opinion. Some adhere to rukyah, and others adhere to reckoning. Furthermore, it also occurs due to natural factors such as geographical location. The further east, the less chance of rukyah. On the other hand, the farther west, the greater the opportunity for rukyah," he added.

According to him, technically, the calendar system cannot be unified. But there are other differences, namely related to the view of the unity of the date. Some emphasize local unity, while others emphasize global calendar unity.

Syamsul said this unification required a period of contemplation that was not short. So, the public must be wise to respond well. There is no other choice but to increase tolerance between religious communities.

On the other hand, UMM Chancellor Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., said that Eid al-Adha will continue to come every year and will not change. What is required to change is Muslims. One of them is by increasing faith and piety to Allah SWT.

According to him, this will make the life and faith of a Muslim more dynamic. Don't get stuck in the static territory. "Let us learn many lessons from the story of Ibrahim and Ismail. Namely, Qurban that are not only for themselves and their families. But also, for the sake of religion, homeland, and nation," he concluded. (cdr/wil)
