As a developing centre for knowledge and technology, Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM) has made significant findings from various research, development, engineering, and innovation activities. Recently, a group of UMM lecturers met with inspectors from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Indonesia (DJKI) on April 24th. Interestingly, these lecturers managed to obtain 9 patent certificates that could enhance the campus's accreditation.
Sofyan Arief, S.H. M.Kn., the head of the Intellectual Property Rights Center (HaKI) UMM, stated that the obtained certifications demonstrate UMM's readiness to compete in the industrial world. The patented products presented were submitted around early March 2024.
"The products offered are purely the result of UMM lecturers' findings. As such, both the campus and the lecturers who have obtained patent certificates receive special benefits. One of them is the advancement in the lecturers' ranks," he explained.

Furthermore, Sofyan explained that one successful patented invention is the Method for Making Pipe Bends with Sliced Model Optimization by Dr. Ir. Moh. Abduh, S.T., M.T., IPM., ACPE., ASEAN Eng. Abduh's method is truly advanced and neat. Especially now, the process of cutting sliced pipe models requires considerable time and effort but yields suboptimal results. Thus, through UMM lecturers' discovery, perfect cutting results are achieved.
Sofyan also conveyed that currently, the method for bending sliced pipe models is still being utilized within the campus. However, both HaKI UMM and Abduh, the creators of the method, are preparing offers with broader scopes, such as to industries and companies.

The success in obtaining these patent certificates is not detached from the monitoring conducted by HaKI UMM. Sofyan stated that every month, the HaKI UMM team ensures the process and results of the lecturers' work. However, it is not uncommon for some research to fail. "Usually, research that fails is due to external factors. For example, bacteria in biotechnology research or inadequate equipment in evaluative research," he said.
Currently, HaKI UMM continues to increase the number of lecturers obtaining patent certifications. It also encourages UMM lecturers to continuously create and receive appreciation. According to him, UMM should not be satisfied with the number of patents already obtained. Instead, it should be capable of generating other ideas, innovations, and solutions.
"At present, we have prepared the lecturers for patent certification again, and it is still in the research process. Hopefully, after this, UMM will obtain more patent certificates because they can enhance the campus's accreditation and lecturers' achievements," he concluded. (ri/wil/fajr)
