The changing times are synonymous with societal transformations. In the past, education could be obtained through libraries or teachers. However, nowadays, students can access the education they desire on their own. This fundamental shift prompted the organization of the Training of Trainers event held by the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) in East Java, in collaboration with the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and INOVASI Indonesia, at the end of October. The event was conducted for three consecutive days at the Kapal Garden Hotel UMM.
Dr. Khozin, M.Si, the Head of the Education Council of PWM, stated that the event was attended by 55 educators from various regions in Indonesia. Its purpose was to promote the literacy and numeracy movement for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-grade elementary school students and encourage self-directed learning. "This event is not the first of its kind. We have organized it three times before, and UMM is hosting it this time," he said.

Meanwhile, according to Ingga Danta Vistara, the System and Policy Advisor of INOVASI, events like this Training of Trainers (ToT) are crucial for educators. Literacy, especially, is the key to opening the doors of learning for children. Literacy can serve as foundational learning for children, helping them better understand the context provided.
"If children are unaccustomed to literacy from an early age, they might have limited information absorption skills in the future," he added.
Furthermore, INOVASI is a seven-year-long collaborative program between Australia and Indonesia aimed at strengthening literacy and numeracy. The program provides education to teachers to prepare them for changes in the education system and to deliver quality education. Many teachers complete their teaching duties without ensuring their students truly understand the material.

"Therefore, the Training of Trainers serves as educational material for teachers to apply literacy and numeracy practices, especially for elementary school students," Ingga emphasized.
UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., who was also present at the event, mentioned that one way to enhance student quality is through character education. An example of this is through student organizations. "We must allow students the freedom to participate in organizations so they can quickly adapt to changes in the world," he added.
He cited UMM's initiative to redesign the curriculum, recognition, and equivalency to facilitate students. This ensures they not only understand the course material but also have skills beneficial for their future. This initiative is packaged in the Center of Excellence (CoE) program. Students are also prepared to graduate within 3.5 to 4 years with skills aligned with their passion. (*tri/wil/fajr)
