The Forestry Department of Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM), in collaboration with the Lumajang Forestry Branch Office, successfully organized a mangrove planting event at Toggu Beach, Probolinggo, on December 9. The event, which involved around 100 students from various high schools and vocational schools in Malang, Batu, and Probolinggo, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving mangrove ecosystems and to make a tangible contribution to environmental conservation efforts.

The lively event was attended by representatives from the Forestry Branch Office and the Coastal Forest Farmers Group, including Azis. In his remarks, Azis expressed his appreciation for UMM's initiative in involving the younger generation in mangrove planting activities. "This mangrove planting is not merely a ceremonial activity but a concrete action to preserve the northern coast of Java. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting the coastline from erosion, preventing seawater intrusion, and serving as habitats for various marine species," said Azis.

Echoing this sentiment, the Head of UMM's Forestry Department, Galit Gatut Prakosa, also emphasized the urgency of mangrove planting. He stated that mangroves are natural fortresses that protect coastal areas from various threats. Planting mangroves not only preserves coastal ecosystems but also contributes to climate change mitigation efforts.

This initiative also serves as an effort to address the flooding issues that frequently affect the Probolinggo area. Mangrove planting was chosen as a solution because these plants have strong roots capable of resisting coastal erosion and ocean waves. With the establishment of mangrove forests, it is hoped that the negative impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion, can be mitigated.

The students participating in the event were visibly enthusiastic as they engaged in every activity. They not only took part in the planting process but were also educated on the importance of mangroves and the proper techniques for planting them. It is hoped that through this initiative, the students can become agents of change and encourage the surrounding community to actively participate in preserving the environment.

On the other hand, Annisa, a student from Batu, expressed her joy in participating in the activity. For her, mangrove planting was not just about planting trees but also a valuable opportunity to learn about the importance of environmental conservation. "I now understand better why mangroves are important for us. I also want to encourage my friends to care more about the environment," said Annisa.

This mangrove planting activity is a form of implementation of the SDG's goals, specifically Point 13 (Climate Action) and Point 15 (Life on Land). UMM is committed to continuing its contributions to environmental conservation and community development efforts. (*/wil/ind)
