Students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) never stop and innovate. The innovation this time came from Hasrullah, an electrical engineering student who created a measuring instrument for measuring industrial salt whiteness. This tool is called the Industrial Salt White Level Instrument.
Hasrul, that's his name, said that he got the idea to make this tool when he was doing his apprenticeship. Hasrul sees that the application of technology to control the quality of the white color in salt is still not optimal.
"Control of the quality of the white color in salt is one of the important things, although the difference in the white color of the salt is thin, it can cause differences in perceptions in society," said the Makassar-born student.

Hasrul made this tool accompanied by managers and field supervisors from PT. Salt Camplong-Madura and UMM lecturers. The equipment works by utilizing the intensity of the reflection from the salt. The better the salt can be seen from the white and its reflection.
“This tool was create based on Arduino. How this tool works, only stick to the salt, and then, information about the white level of the salt will be displayed on the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen. I divided the white level into five, namely premium, super white, white, rejected, and hold, ”said the first child of two siblings.

Now, this tool has been using by PT. Salt Camplong-Madura to measure the color of its production salt. Hasrul also received the Most Innovated Intern award from PT. Garam (Persero) on November 2, 2020.
"This tool still needs some improvement, especially in the area of reading the color levels. In the future, I want to patent this tool. I hope that later this tool will not only be used for salt, but also on rice, sugar, and others, "he said. (syi/wil)
