University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) always encourages a culture of achievement for its students, both in the academic and non-academic fields. One of them was achieved by Palapa Maha Awatara, a UMM Psychology student who successfully won three achievements at the same time at the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Cup in Malang City and Kushin Ryu M Karate-Do Indonesia (KKI) for the East Java Provincial Administration (JATIM). The provincial level competition was held at the end of last August at the Ken Arok Sports Building (GOR), Malang City.

His achievements include 1st place in the men's -67 U21 Kumite, 1st place in the u21 team Kumite and the best of the best u21. As he is affectionately known, Tara said that since he was little, karate has been her favorite sport. This hobby brought him to achieve many achievements as an athlete at the regional and even national levels. It started with a dojo (karate practice site) not far from his house.

"Because I often watch people practice, my interest in karate grew. Alhamdulillah, this hobby has brought me to become an athlete and win various championships until now. Moreover, family and friends are also supportive. Plus, there are various facilities provided by UMM White Campus," he said.

The athlete who also passed the provincial selection said that intense training for one month had become a routine in preparation for the competition. Two weeks of physical strengthening exercises, one week of technical deepening and two weeks of match simulation. He felt lucky because UMM provided many facilities. One of them is the karate student activity unit (UKM). From there, he can practice with each other and share strategies to win the match.

"UMM supports me in every championship. Not only me but all students' talents and potentials are accommodated through UKM and other organizations. That way, students can continue to add and improve their skills," he said.

Previously, this 2021 student had won the Jember Open in July. He also bought up two champions in the competition, including the individual and team Kumite categories. "I hope that I can pass the national selection and be able to represent Indonesia in international championships," the native Balinese student. (apg/haq/wil)
