The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has made a proud achievement again. Recently, three UMM students won third place in the novice category in the National University Debating Championship (NUDC) organized by the National Achievement Center of the Republic of Indonesia. More than 100 teams from universities throughout Indonesia competed in this event. This debate competition was held from June 5 until 12, 2023.

One of the team members, Mohammad Rakan Putra Zazli Agus from the psychology department, said that NUDC is one of the prestigious debate competitions. NUDC requires its participants not only to be able to express their ideas in English but also to master global knowledge, analyze, make judgments, and convince the public.

“(Participating in) NUDC can be said as a dream for all debaters because it is an official competition of the National Achievement Center directed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, whose level is equivalent to the National Student Scientific Week event. The debate system itself uses the British Parliamentary,” said Rakan.

Furthermore, the student who is passionate about debating said that the novice category achieved by his team is a category under an open category. This category is specifically for new debaters who have not previously won in English Debate at the regional or national level.

“In the previous year, the team of UMM failed to be selected for the region. Alhamdulillah, this year we can bring the bronze medal of NUDC to Malang,” said Rakan.

In the process, there are various provided themes: international, social, and political issues in the past few years, arts and culture, and sports. It made him and his team read and understand each theme provided.

The student from Gorontalo added that the selection process is based on each region. The team of UMM itself went through the selection process at the part of LLDIKTI VII: East Java. Meanwhile, other team members were Faris Hilaal Firaas and Saputra Yusuf, enrolled in International Relations and Psychology respectively.

“We have been well-prepared and practiced much also, starting from independent training until being trained by coaches with international standards. During the competition, we actually did not face many obstacles. Perhaps, we need to hone our experience. UMM also provides more facilities to support our journey,” ended Rakan. (zak/wil)
