Consistently appreciating student and indie films, Kine Club University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held the 17th Malang Film Festival. The virtual performance for the second time will take place from Monday (7/3) to next Thursday. Similar to last year, this festival can be enjoyed by the general public online by registering through loket.com.
One of the competition's programmers, Mujaddid Izzul Fikri, said that the number of films that passed the curation of MAFI Fest was 18 films from 335 applicants. These films will be screened in the Malang Film Festival Competition Program. The public can also participate in other exciting programs such as the Curatorial Program, Special Screening, Film Criticism Class, Nusantara Appreciation Screen, Community, General Discussion, Joint Production Appreciation Screen, Malangan Session, and Malang Sinau Documentary Appreciation Screen.
"In addition to being a place for film appreciation, the Malang Film Festival is also a place for learning about films, film discussions, and exhibitions on film works. Especially in difficult times and a pandemic like this," explained the man who is often called Adit.
This film festival has its peculiarities, namely the Malangan Session and the Malang Sinau Documentary Appreciation Screen. The program will involve a filmmaker from Malang whose films will be screened at the main event of MAFI Fest 2022.
"Later on, the festival organizers will screen films by Malang filmmakers. Then also offered a film from the Malang Sinau Documentary workshop held last December. In addition, we also hold a Karya Nusantara Appreciation Screen which focuses on works with authentic values about Indonesia," he continued.
On the other hand, Achmad Sulchan An-Nauri, one of the curators of MAFI Fest 2022 explained that several categories of films were contested. Starting from student fiction, student documentaries, student fiction, and student documentaries. As for the number of student documentaries and students throughout Indonesia who entered 70 films. Who produced seven short films from that figure that passed the curation process.
"We have done the curation process for all the films that are submitted. We highlight several aspects—starting from the part of content issues to cinematography. Judging from the number of films submitted, young people's enthusiasm to make films is high even though we are still in a pandemic situation.
Alif Immanullah, as the Festival Director, hopes that the MAFI Fest in 2022 can provide an opportunity for appreciation for indie films for students and students throughout Indonesia. "Hopefully, the presence of MAFI can pump up the spirit of young filmmakers to work. Not only making films but also distributing, exhibiting, and being appreciated," he said. (apg/wil)
